Summio Waterpark Zwartkruis is the perfect base for 'wetterwille', which means 'water fun' in Fries. Did you know that Friesland is made up of more than 50% water? Water enthusiasts can enjoy themselves to the full in the surrounding area! Hire a boat at the park's boat hire and sail to Bergumermeer, the Leien or, for example, follow the Lits-Lauwersmeer Route: a route connecting De Alde Feanen National Park with Lauwersmeer National Park. You can also go standup paddleboarding or canoeing in the village of Koullum and the water experience route, a tour through the city centre of Leeuwaarden, is highly recommended during your stay in Friesland!
The area around Summio Waterpark Zwartkruis has various lovely cities and villages where you can enjoy the most beautiful monuments, culture, and history! Leeuwarden, with its historic buildings, interesting museums and exceptional canals, is a 20-minute drive from the waterside park. Or you could walk through the well-preserved old centre, visit the city walls and admire the picturesque little houses surrounded by water in the fortified town of Dokkum. Dokkum is a 20-minute drive. Another place to explore is versatile Drachten, a 25-minute drive from the waterside park. There you will find numerous shops, lovely restaurants and bars, and interesting art galleries and museums like Museum Drachten. Sneek, Heerenveen and Groningen are also lovely cities to visit during your stay in Friesland. These cities are about a 45-minute drive from Summio Waterpark Zwartkruis.
Would you like to spend a day at the zoo? Sanjes Safari, a fabulous zoo with lots of play options, is only a 10-minutes drive from Summio Waterpark Zwartkruis. Admire more than 40 species of animals in the zoo, and you can touch many of them. There is also an outdoor playground including a 25-metre-long zipline, a train that rides over the park or visit the large traffic park. There are more wild animals at AquaZoo, a 15-minute drive from Summio Waterpark Zwartkruis. Wander past the beautiful aquariums and admire red-bellied piranhas, purple vampire crabs and dogfish, among others. You can also see various exotic animals that live on land, such as Siberian tigers, polar bears, rheas, and African penguins.
De Alde Feanen National Park, only a 20-minute drive from Summio Waterpark Zwartkruis, is a true paradise for nature lovers. Lauwersmeer National Park is also well worth visiting. Sail there from the waterside park or drive there in 30 minutes. This National Park is a vast nature reserve where you can admire the beauty of the Wadden region. It is located by the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy the panoramic landscapes, winding waters, lovely reed beds and various little islands.
Young and old can have endless fun near Summio Waterpark Zwartkruis. If you are out and about with (grand)children, the following places are unmissable during your stay! Aventoer, with its indoor and outdoor playgrounds and various indoor and outdoor activities, is only a 10-minute drive from the park. Duinen-Zathe Amusement Park, formerly known as Assen Traffic Park, is a great day out for the whole family. This amusement park is a good 30-minute drive from Summio Waterpark Zwartkruis and offers a range of fun attractions for young and old. Don't forget to visit the traffic circuit at Duine-Zathe with dozens of pedal cars and where children can get a special driving licence.
The Fries Museum, in the heart of Leewaarden, is only a 20-minute drive from Summio Waterpark Zwartkruis. This museum is a treasure trove of Frisian culture and history and with no fewer than 2000,000 objects, it houses the largest provincial collection in the Netherlands. Are you an art lover? Then you must visit the Princessehof Ceramics Museum at only a 20-minute drive. If you are looking for an educational day out, discover the Frisian Maritime Museum at a 40-minute drive from Summio Waterpark Zwartkruis. In this fascinating museum, you find out all about the maritime history in Friesland, about sports played on ice and the history of the city of Sneek. Skûtsje Museum Earnewâld, the Fryslân Natural History Museum, Museum ’t Fiskershúske and Museum Belvédère are also worth visiting during your stay in Friesland.
